Alex Cross is back—and so is a raging and suicidal Gary Soneji. Out of prison and dying from AIDS he contracted there, he seeks revenge on Cross before he dies. We are also introduced to a new pair of rivals whose paths cross with those of Alex and Soneji. Thomas Augustine Pierce, known as St. Augustine, has been chasing his demon, Mr. Smith, since his fiancée's savage murder. Mr. Smith is a unique monster, with actions so insane they are thought of as 'not of the earth.' Pierce, a top detective for the FBI and Interpol, might even be better than Cross. When Alex is attacked in his home and falls into a near-death coma, Pierce travels to Washington to assist with the investigation. As he begins to unravel the mystery, he is summoned to Paris with a postcard from Mr. Smith inviting him to a deadly game. The body count rises, tension escalates, and two killers are on the loose, watching every move. Who is the cat, who is the mouse? What is the final trap, and who will survive?
