Gary Panter began imagining Dal Tokyo, a future Mars terraformed by Texan and Japanese workers, as far back as 1972, inspired by a friend's idea about cultural and temporal collision. The 'Dal' is short for Dallas. Panter's concept explores the exotic far-awayness of Japan from Texas, influenced by Japanese monster movies and woodblock prints. The first 63 strips were published in 1983 in the L.A. Reader, with later installments in Riddim magazine. Dal Tokyo features a rich blend of visual and verbal elements, with Panter's distinctive line work combined with surreal and non-sequitur humor.
