Madinah shares exceptional significance to the faithful since the migration or Hijrah of the Prophet Muhammad (symbol) to the city, serving as a safe haven from which Islam could thrive. Al-Quds is just as important due to its initial status as the Qiblah or direction of prayer until this was changed to Makkah. The Dome of the Rock, Al-Aqsa Mosque and other sites mark this place as one of considerable importance to the faithful. Istanbul, the capital of one of the world’s greatest empires, served as the nerve centre for the custodianship of the ‘Three Harams’ of Makkah, Madinah and Al-Quds.
