Mr Kiasu: Everything Also First Class

Mr Kiasu is one of Singapore’s most recognizable comic icons from the 1990s, known for its local humor that is highly identifiable and relatable to Singaporeans. The comic features a caricature of a typical Singaporean who “does not like to lose,” and has sold over 650,000 copies since its debut in 1990, with eight comic volumes and three spin-off titles. The franchise also includes a live-action drama series and various merchandise. Relaunched in 2017, Mr Kiasu is now set in a modern, technologically advanced Singapore where he applies his own quirky “Kiasu” solutions to everyday situations. The stories take readers on surreal mental trips, exploring new physical realms in a humorous manner, emphasizing the idea that it’s better to be “kiasu” than sorry, with a motto of “First Class or No Class!” Johnny Lau, a Singaporean artist, is the creator of Mr Kiasu. Since the 1990s, Lau has served as a creative director or co-producer for various projects across different art and design fields, including publishing, TV, interior design, and mentoring youth talents.
