Painter Honor Sullivan has made a life for herself and her three daughters—Regis, Agnes, and Cecilia—at Star of the Sea Academy on the Connecticut shore. Here she teaches art at the convent school’s seaside campus, overseen by her sister-in-law, Mother Superior Bernadette Ignatius. Regis surprises everyone with her announcement of her upcoming marriage, which sets off a series of life-changing events.
